Save time and frustration by beginning correctly. Alter your favorite fashion patterns for a perfect fit under Shirley's directions.

Get the expert help learning or polishing your sewing skill from expert Shirley Smith at the Sewing Arts and breeze through the tough spots.

Hands-on-instruction in small classes in a well appointed studio. You will get comprehensive,

step-by-step techniques that show you how--from the first stitch to your final touch.

With Shirley's guidance choose the correct style and pattern for those mystery pieces of fabric

in your stash.

When you are wearing a well fitted and constructed garment there is nothing quite like the thrill

that comes from getting a compliment and being able to say "I made it"!

Every student has the use of a large worktable, a Bernina Sewing machine and shares professional pressing equipment and sergers and an overstitch machine. And of course Shirley's time and expertise.

Work Shop Class Schedule is flexible, usually two sessions a month on Tuesday. Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. You can take one day or several concurrent days.

Personal Pattern Fitting

A Personal Pattern Fitting with Shirley covers choosing the correct pattern size and accurately taking your measurements and adjusting the commercial tissue in preparation for tissue fitting the pattern and construction of the muslin. After the muslin is constructed, Shirley will pin fit the muslin and adjust your personal tissue pattern to reflect any changes. The price includes a complete set of measurements, a tissue fitting, pin fitting the muslin, the completed and corrected muslin and tissue, which let you see exactly what adjustments have been done to your patterns. You need not be present except to have your measurements taken, to pin fit the tissue and the muslin.

When your muslin is completed try it on periodically when you begin a new sewing project to check the fit and adjust your fashion tissue as your basic tissue has been adjusted, following the directions in The Art Of Sewing A Custom Fit. Workbook.

You should allow at least two days for a personal pattern fitting. Your personal pattern, having the dimensions of your individual figure can be used to adjust other commercial patterns so you eliminate all but “fine tune fitting” when you sew.

If you want to observe and learn you are welcome to take full advantage of that learning opportunity by watching and helping Shirley adjust your basic. You can also ready other fashion patterns while Shirley is working on your pattern. Bring several fashion patterns of your choice and Shirley will work with you to adjust those pattern after your basic is finished.

During the workshop class in her fully equipped studio, Shirley will take your measurements, help you make make necessary pattern alterations on the basic tissue, do the tissue fit, and help you construct the muslin, then the muslin will be pin fit and the basic tissue changed to reflect any changes made to the muslin.

After your muslin is completed Shirley will guide you in adjusting any fashion patterns so that you will have a firm knowledge of how to use your basic to adjust other fashion patterns at home and how to tissue fit them. Allow at least three or four workshop classes.
